Anyone who laughs at you for "only" having a Ducati Monster 620 as your first bike is an idiot.

Of course you shouldn't even be thinking of a duck for your first motorcycle; but if you have the money to buy it your parents probably have the money for your funeral.

Seriously think about starting off with a bike more appropriate for a beginner.

There are three types of people to consider.

1. People who don't ride motorcycles. These guys will have no idea how big it is or how big a bike has to be to qualify as big, anyway. They'll react the same way to a Hyosung Comet 250 as a Hayabusa.

2. Shallow riders who only care about horsepower and/or status symbols, and refuse to respect someone for considering their riding skill level or budget. They'll usually snub you for not buying a top of the line bike from their own brand, whether it's Honda or Harley. Who really wants to please guys like that, anyway?

3. All the rest of motorcyclists who do not fall into group 2. They definitely won't laugh at you. Group 2 seems to be the loudest group of motorcyclists on the Intenet, but I've found that group 3 is far more common in real life.

Some obligatory safety warnings: I highly recommend taking a class such as the MSF Beginner Rider Course and getting a full set of safety gear.

11 is correct about laying it down. I went down on my first bike when I was a teen. Luckily, I was only going 10 mph or so. A monster 620 is nothing to sneeze at. Anyone teasing you about it especially knowing you are a beginner are people you don't want to associate with anyway. Any genuine fan motorcycles will welcome you to the flock. I do recommend a rider safety course if you haven't had one. Check for Abate in your state. Riding is a serious venture but is also very fun if you are aware of the risks involved and ride safely.

One thing, always assume a driver in a car has not seen you even if you have made eye contact.

First of all, who cares what anyone thinks, is an image worth killing yourself over? I don't think so. Definitely stick with something small. Secondly, like others said, I wouldn't buy a Ducati as a first bike, especially if your buying it new. You should buy something that already has a few dents you can add to.

First of all, your a retard for buying a duce for a first bike. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE twins, but really, your comment about how it is less expensive.....ITS A DUCATI!! For a first bike go with something like a smaller suzuki sv or the like.

(everyone drops their first bike or does something bad to it, do you want that bad thing to happen to a ducati?)

That is the smartest thing you can do. Make sure you dont pay too much for it, because you WILL lay it down. THat is not being negative, that is just a fact of life and it will most likely happen while you are sitting still. If people give you crap about it, just tell them the truth and they will respect the fact that you didnt go out and buy a hyabusa or 929 which would most likely kill you.

buy something used & cheap to repair that is similiar in style to what you ultimately hope to own. a ducatti isn't cheap to buy or fix. also check with the dealers in your area some will give you a buy back gaurantee, they will gaurantee a trade in price on a new or bigger bike purchased when you are ready
