Pseudomonas aeruginosa is gram negative bacterium that is most commonly found in hospital settings. It is an opportunist that attacks patients with other conditions like cancer burns and penetrative wounds, (e.g. splinters, cuts, contaminated I.V. entry points. It is found in the urinary tract, especially after doctor manipulative examination, or blockage clearance. Pseudorouge, (its medical nickname), attacks many body tissues, like bone, cartilege, ears, eyes, urinary tract. The bug can contaminate artifical heart valves to cause endocarditis. etc.
Lately this organism is rapidly developing resistance to a wide spectrum of antibiotics, like many enterococci.
Treatment usually is with the penecillin or cephalosporin family of antibiotics. Sometimes fluoroquinolones are used like ciproflacin.
Surprisngly, Pseudomonas was orgininally a plant diease organism, that jumped the species barrier.
