I'd say you're onto it. Probably a dead mouse or rat caught up in your ventilation system.

Like you said it could be somekind of animal that has been trapped in the air duct system. Unfortunately there is a strong possibility it is dead. I would suggest calling out a a/c company or your landlord to check the ducts for blockage. Good luck to you. Stock up on the air fresheners in the meantime. If you rent and do not own it will be the owners responsibility.

I do not know much about air conditioning but here are my thoughts.
It might be worth you while investigating cleaning the ducting of the air conditioning system and changing the filters. Also check out the water cooling system for the air conditioning.
If that fails, it will probably be to do with where the air intake is coming from. If it was connected with that, is is possible to route it elsewhere?
Good Luck

I had this problem last week, in my back hallway. It was a rotten potato in the bag I had bought the week before. It's usually a cool place and perfect storage. It's hot out, check your potatoes, or even your onions, and never store the two close together, the onions will rot and the potatoes will get premature eyes.

Did you just clean your filter?? Or when was the last time...you got to clean them every 10-14 days. Also, check if it's leaking inside your connection or tube for the water to get out might be clogged.. You can unclog with a hose and the pressure of the water but I would also add some bleach to get rid of the guck.

We had the same problem, when we called the air conditioning company it turned up a dead bird in the vent, the vent was broken and the bird got caught in. call the maintenance they will find out mean time use white vinegar put it in small cups and distribute it throw the room it will help absorb the smell.
Good luck

it took all day long but it got rid of the smell. and i got rid of the cat hope this works. while you are at it. get down and smell the carpet around the vent, also wash the vent in the bucket of sopy water. hope this works for you. it is a pain!.

Try calling the maintenace man to take a look at it. The filter may be dirty or they may need to put disinfectant tablets in the a/c. They can change the filter

Well if you indeed live in an apartment I'd first suggest calling the maintenance guys. They could most likely figure that out for you.
