I bought futon frame (used) and didn't come with directions so right now all the pieces are in the middle of my livingroom floor and driving me crazy.... It is a black metal frame

Look for a manufacturer label and see if you can google for the manufacturer.
you need to put the man frame together first before you place the bed portion in but loose enough to allow the hinge pin to slip into the sliding channel.
Go to a furniture store.. find a similar model and see if one of the salesmen can get you a copy of the instructions
