Canada is rich in resources (it also sells more Oil to the U.S. than any other country), already its biggest trading partner (Ontario alone is doing more than Japan) and has no military to stop the U.S.. It's the second biggest country on earth yet only has 1/10 of the U.S. population.
Who would and especially who could stop the U.S. ?
In the longterm......

The U.S. could always claim we (I'm Canadian by the way) have weapons of mass destruction, called Timbits.

I know Canada has a military but compared to the U.S.'s it's insignificant ! Our copters (for example) are older than I am and need 40 hours of service per hour of use. Our subs are bought used (and then catch fire). Our jeeps are not field-worthy. Our soldiers are first-rate but couldn't stop the Vatican (the swiss guard) from invading us as they wouldn't have the means to get to the front.

Mary B - Is invading unfriendly countries for oil allowed ?

P.S. I'm onnly playing devil's advocat - I don't want the U.S. to invade anybody and our militia (hell, half the country here has a weapon) would frown upon sharing the Poutine and Maple syrop.

Since we are playing devils advocate...why don't we just buy the parts of Canada we need. The province of Alberta is where all the oil & gas is. The population of Alberta in 2005 was 3,306,359. If we were to spend $100 billion, that would give each resident of Alberta just over $30,000 as a "welcome to the USA gift"

What a stupid question! Canada is our ally. The U.S. tried this during the War of 1812 and failed miserably. The U.S. should work harder on finding alternative resources for fuel. Invading friendly countries for oil is just plain stupid.

the whole world would get pissed off at the U.S., since we have no legit reason to invade Canada, and the British would lead somekind of coalition to defend Canada. The UN would also defend them. Then the U.S. would propably be deafeated, since other countries have wanted to attack the U.S. since the Cold War.

I believe you got your answer already... because they are only invading 'unfriendly' countries for that purpose.

But since the line between 'friendly' and 'unfriendly' is a very thin one, be careful what you're praying for my friend.

Where did you ever get the idea that Canada has no military?
