I was hired to answer phones. After some time I was given more projects, and I did very well. But now I have completed these projects, and the phone does not ring very often. They let me use the computer to pass time. I get paid good, but I'm so bored. I go around asking if there is anything I can do, but there isn't. I'm afraid they really don't need me, but they say they do. I almost want to get another job, because I'm so bored. What to do?

This is for miss BonesofaTeacher sense she has enabled her email. I am not related to anyone here. I have never asked this question before. And I know I did well on the projects because I was praised for my good work.

Bring a book to work. Take a class. Sounds like you would have plenty of time to study.

I think you should conider looking for new employment. I have been in that situation before. I was eventually let go due to cut-backs. The other alternative is to go to your boss and tell him/her how you feel and let them know that you would like more work to do. If you have completed other projects in the past and done well with them then they should have no reason to not give you more to work on. A last ditch effort would be to tell them that unless you are given more work you will have to look for another job. I know what it is like. Being bored all day is absolutely no fun. I like to be challenged at work and playing on the internet is no way to spend your day. Its no different than sitting in front of the tv for 8 hours straight. You need to exercise your mind just like you do your body. Have you thought about taking some classes? This may show your employer that you are serious about your job and at the very least help if you decide to find another job.

Keep up with what you are doing. Eventually you will get more work. I am in the same situation right now, that's why I am answering. I work for an attorney that has a hard time letting go of projects. Prove that you can do the work and they will, sooner or later, give you something to do.

Enjoy it!!! I am in exactly the same position as you are... Before I came here I was working like a slave, getting paid pennies, and my boss was an a*s... so just be thankful cause it could be a lot worse. And if you feel like you should, use that time on the computer to look for something more fulfilling... Good Luck.

Ha! Try coming up with new ideas for productivity. Start reading business magazines that are related to your field and use their ideas.
I do inside sales so I am on the phone a lot. When we slow, I have new projects that I start for my self. I read Selling Power magazine and use a lot of there methods. Works well!
Stay busy!

Take some initiative.....Do something that nobody asks you to, like organize the files on the computer, rearrange a storage closet....things that will make people say "Hey, that's cool!" and eventually you'll get a raise or a better position.

Or quit and get a real job.

I would love getting paid good and not have to work hard all day!! but if you are the type of person who is so bored you want to slit your wrists then you should look for another job.

Find another job. If you feel like you're not needed, then you must not have any feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day. I say start searching for something that satisfies you. Good Luck!
