I am thinking of driving to Australia, avioding wars and areas where us brits are no longer welcome, I thought perhaps via russia, china, malaysia, then by ship to OZ.
Does anybody have any experience/advice of this journey and its advantages/pitfalls

No experience I'm afraid, but you sound as if you need a SERIOUSLY decent vehicle if you're going through such potential extremes of climate. Also to think about would be accommodation - maybe in the vehicle or a really good set of camping gear.

I found this guy's site on Google, a bit out of date, but he may have some useful hints for you: http://www.oland.co.uk/

However, these guys are currently doing the very same trip you want to do and will probably be of more use to you: http://www.hectorsadventures.com/

Hope it goes well - heading to Aus myself at some point this year, so might catch you along the way! ;)

You probably can't drive because to avoid warzones you need to go through siberia, which doesn't have many roads, but you can certainly do it by train. You can take trains across Europe to Moscow then catch the trans-Mongolian railway to Beijing. Then from there you can use trains and buses to make your way down south. To get from China to Thailand you have no choice but to cross through either Burma, Laos, Cambodia or Vietnam (none of which are very welcoming), but Vietnam is probably the safest bet. From Thailand you can get through Malaysia to Indonesia from where you can get a boat to Darwin.

The fact that you are British doesn't make a difference, you'd have a lot more trouble if you were an American.

#1 Forget it. The Chinese don't have fond memories of the British(think Opium Wars) and Malaysians aren't too wild about the Brits either. #2 Fly

I have had a friend look into it and he found it was the same price to buy on a cargo run from asia to Oz as it was from the \UK or USA to Oz.
