To assassinate is to murder a prominent person by surprise attack, as for political reasons.
To be killed is to lose your life for reasons other than for natural causes, which includes being assassinated.

This answer is different depending on what group you fall into
Politicians- Any politics who is murdered is assassinated even your neighborhood alderman
Musicians- If your mom and your sister both wanted to have sex with him or your brother and father with her when they were killed then they were assassinated.
Mobsters- If you are killed before the trial you are suppose to testify in.
Sport's Hero- Brett Farve is the only one who could ever be assassinated ( Packer Fan)
Celebrities- If you are murdered after you have sex with Paris Hilton, but before you have sex with Lindsey Lohan

When you are assasinated you are killed by a professional hitman or bounty hunter who's sole purpose is to kill. To be considered killed or murdered you just have to be killed by any John Doe

In order to be considered assasinated you must be at least 18 years of age, must be 5 feet or taller, and weigh between 100 and 300 lbs. (Exceptions include superman and midget mob bosses)

"Assassinated" actually refers the planned killing of people of academic, political and/or wealth prominence ... especially between ideallistically divergent societies and/or countries.
Everything else is just plain killing.

actually, you're considered to be assassinated if your killer has already planned to kill you. murder and kill are simpler words for it.
