i'm trying to remodel my bathroom and i want to put a 3 tier shlf in the shower. i need to know what to use (1x4,2x4, or cement board).

It might be easier to pre-fabricate the shelf unit and then mount it as one. Cement board alone I don't think is good. I'd use 1x4 or 1x6 perhaps with 3/4 inch plywood backing. And then veneer the whole unit with 1/4 inch cement board before you coat it with a waterproofing product. Laticrete makes an excellent one. If you want it to last I would not skip the waterproofing. You can mortar right over top a this juncture.

You also may want to think about building the 'shelf box' and have two tempered glass shelves cut. Or find the glass and design around them.

Frame up your shelving unit, cover it with waterock or cement board Then tile it once you've attached it to the wall, you will need to put a slight angle on the back if the wall is plumb so as to all water to escape the shelves and into the shower and not sit and rot the grout.

go to the hardware store or walmart. they have things that will suction cup on and serve the same purpose.
