Basic story is about a man, Captain Nemo, who builds a giant submarine named Nautilus. He uses it to sink ships that carry cargoes of arms and warlike materials, by ramming it. The submarine looks like a monster with giant eyes, which are large portholes, and it has a serrated edge on it's front so that it can cut through the hulls of wooden ships. He captures some survivors off one of the sunken ships (Professor Arranax, his servant Conseil and a whaler named Ned Land) and takes them on a journey under the sea where he shows them how he and his crew live of fish and plants from under the sea. The crew have special self contained diving suits that allow them to breathe underwater. Nemo has a secret island where he and his ship and crew are based. During a final attack he is wounded and takes the Nautilus to his island where he intends to die accompanied by his crew, who are fiercely loyal to him, and his prisoners. During a scuffle the prisoners escape in a small boat from the ship and as they row away the island, which is volcanic, erupts. The Nautilus sinks in the ensuing maelstrom.

The book was written by Frenchman Jules Verne who predicted many thinks in the future including, in this book, submarines, diving suites and electricity. It was written as an anti-war / anti-slavery protest book in 1870.

Read the book, it's enthralling.

A marine biology professor and his assistant and a fisherman friend got captured by this captain who hates the world and who lives entirely in his submarine under water with his crew. They traveled all around the globe in this submarine and had many adventures. They went shark hunting, giant pearl harvesting, battled giant squids, had an accident trapped under the antarctic ice, etc. At the end, the professor and co wanted to leave the submarine and return to land by secretly escaping in a small life "boat". When they were escaping there was a huge malstrom in the sea that probably destroyed the submarine.

The whole submarine idea was written by Verne way before a real submarine was invented. It's a super interesting read. The language is a bit old, but the story is very nice.

Certainly, it is science fiction written in the mid 19thC and features the mysterious captain Nemo, who sails the world in a submarine (this was written long before submarines were more than curiosities).

Nemo has a grudge against the world - he sails the seas, exploring and making marine biological-tye discoveries with his faithful crew. His sub (the Nautlius) is mistaken for a sea monster of some kind and is hunted by the governments of the world after a collision with a liner. The story is told by three members of the expedition who fall over board and end up on the Nautilus. They travel the seas, observing and having adventures before escaping when the sub is in peril. The book doesn't say whether or not the sub and Nemo escape.

Basically it's a story about Captain Nemo, who takes every opportunity to use his submarine...The Nautillas, to sink ships..it covers considerable more, but I won't spoil it for you if you're considering reading it (or watching the old film which starred James Mason and Kirk Douglas.
