Why can't I transfer my e-mail address book from my old yahoo.co.uk account to my new btinternet.com account?

Export your Yahoo address book in csv format and then import it into your new email account.

Just send yourself an e-mail from the Yahoo account, copying everyone in your address book. (You can make it an announcement of your new address.)

When you get it at your new BT account, add everyone as contacts.

just check out the pop3 server and the smtp server and then test then connection and then transfer them ok ?
