Yesterday the heat index was 105 degrees. It never gets this hot here! I run high school cross country, and i need to train. Is it okay for me to run outdoors?

Yes, its perfectly safe to go running just as long as you run in the morning before the sun rises or in the evening. But remember to stay hydrated before during and after.

It is not good for you to run outdoors when it is over 100 degrees, as your body temperature can't keep up with the perspiration that you are losing. Even when you are drinking lots of water or Gatorade (very sugary), you are still losing more hydration that you are probably taking in. You could get dehydrated and that is very dangerous. Long runs like cross country (several miles I am presuming) could damage your body.

Only if you go late at night, or early in the morning, when it is cooler. Exercising in extreme heat will cause you to dehydrate, lose electrolites, get heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
Try runnning on a treadmill in an airconditioned gym, or better yet, try swimming, or pool running (a good idea to be cross training at this point in the season anyway)

I would sugest that you shouldn't go running at the hottest times of the day from noon to four, but what I have been doing recently is running at 7:30 in the morning. That way it isn't too hot out yet and I can still get a good workout in.

not to deminish that fact that 105 is hot, but i'm used to a little hotter weather. I live in the az desert, and 105 is what i'm used to. BUT! I know people that have hurt themselves running in weather like that. first off, if you are not used to running in the heat, ease into it. (although I would try to run in the coolest part of the day, it's just nicer/more comfortable/ less sweaty) Drink ALOT of water! about half your body wieght in ounces.( 100lb person would drink 50 oz)the night before. and about a quarter of your body wieght in ounces 1-1.5 hrs before you run. carry a bottle with you. I like to have a half frozen water bottle if i run in the heat. wear sunscreen. sun glasses help if the sun gets in your eyes.
carry a cell phone. if you over heat it might be a good idea to call someone to pick you up.

in a way it is good to run under harsh conditions, because you may have races under similair conditions.

Treat you body nice and it will get you through.

No I do`nt believe it is, as my Grandson is in the Army, and they are not allowed to do Physical Exercise, so In my opinion if the Army do`nt allow their Soldier`s to do P.E, you should not Train in the heat.
