I've downloaded an AVI file that's 700.95MB & want to burn the film onto CD as I don't have a DVD writer. Someone told me that I have to convert the file to MPEG first & then split it because it won't all fit on one CD.

Is this right? How do I do it?

I want to be able to play the film on my DVD player, not on my PC. I've already got the film on my harddrive for that!

I've already tried burning the AVI file direct onto CD but it won't play at all.

You can just burn it as a regular data file - if you want to watch it on your computer. CDs hold about 705 megabytes of data, so it will hold the movie

If you want to watch it on a stand-alone DVD player that's connected to your TV, then yes you'll have to convert it to an MPEG using something like Tmpgenc.

However, Wal-mart sells a DVD player for $40 that plays Divx files. It plays any .avi file that has been encoded in Divx format, which most are these days. I own one and it works great.

But, if you still need to convert it to MPEG, check this software out:

You can download a free 30 day trial of a program called 'Ulead Movie Factory' for burning DVD's and video CD's. It will automatically convert the file from AVI to MPEG.
There's also a program called 'McFunSoft video solution' that will convert files to AVI, MPEG or WMV.

If you use the Ulead program to make a video CD you can play it in your DVD player.

Your file will fit onto a cd and if you're using a program like Nero, you won't have to convert it unless you want it in a format that will play on a DVD player, in which case you need a program like DVD Santa

use nero 7

there is a program included in it that you can create your own vcd or dvd movie.

since you dont have a dvd writer create a VCD movie only.

search for that part in nero 7, in there you can choose if you will create a 700mb movie file or larger than that. since you need higher than 700mb buy a cd that can hold 800mb of data.

just follow the on screen instruction, you can create it as if its a dvd too! you can place menu, titles, background music and much more!

after all the instructions and the burning process you have now your own fresh movie that can be played to any vcd or dvd players.

easy on the burning though dont let the fire catch you.. ciao!

most 700 meg cd's hold around 725mb in order to check open the cd folder in my computer and click on properties with a blank cd in and it will tell you the capacity. Then simply drag and drop the folder as you would with any other file. You dont need to convert it.

Yes you can burn them to CD. the size of the file is the limiting factor 700mb is all you will get on a cd. my DVD player plays .AVI and/or DIVX so you will just have to check and see if your player can play them. .

Thats right. Why not burn it onto a dvd?? It would all fit there. Anyways... Yeah, you need to convert it. If you have nero.... You can use Nero Vision to do that.
