My 8 mo old is cutting his fangs and has been miserable for the last 3 days. He nurses fine but is just so fussy and uncomfortable. I have tried Tylenol, teething tablets, orajel, teething rings and cold cloths..nothing seems to work. Any suggestions?

You can try freezing a piece of ice and wrap it in a wash cloth.

In the old days, doctors used to recommend putting peppermint schnapps on their gums. I would steer clear of that today. Get those teething things that go in the freezer or give the kid an ice cube! There has to be a teething ring he will like on the market!

When I was a child, we didn't need any of that nonsense, because we had Paregoric, the gold standard in topical pain relief (also good for stomach ache, if a few drops are put in water). Mother dipped her finger in it and smeared it on the painful gums, and instantly the pain was gone.
Unfortunately, it's no longer available over the counter, but I can't imagine why a doctor couldn't prescribe this incredibly useful medication for you.
My sisters and I (as well as every kid in the neighborhood, county and state) received it, to great benefit!

Take an ice cube, wrap it, half way with a wipe (the non-toxic, no perfumes or alcohol). Tie the wipe to the ice cube with a rubber band, then give it to him. His hands won't freeze, but the ice will keep him hydrated and numb the pain in his gums.

Try putting a piece of ice in a wash cloth and then put a 1/2 a teaspoon of sugar on top of the ice. Put a rubber band around the wash cloth so that the ice and sugar don't fall out and let your baby suck on it, in my family we call these sugar nips. It worked for both of my kids and my niece and nephews. Hope it works for you.

ew, i haaaate to say this, but this is one of those tough times that will bond you two together. after trying all that, he's just gonna have to get thru it. do keep his pain curbed by tylenol, but not too much. if teething tabs don't work well, don't keep giving them as they have been linked (only small percentage) to seizures, especially in boys. Help him keep the edge off pain with tylenol or maybe even ibuprophen if your dr. will allow it (mine did), but don't put alcohol on a wash cloth or any other stuff. just take this as a time you get to rock him through the crying and grouchy times, and know that it will be over before you know it. my daughter is going in kindergarten and son is 3 and it seems like just yesterday that they were sobbing their little baby eyes out because of teething. help him get perspective. Tell him soothingly, "I know, sweetie, I'm here. I know, you told me that before" etc :) lol :)

When you gave him tylenol, did you also rub some into his gums? This worked great for my daughter. She also wanted her pacifier alot when she was teething. Sometimes, though, all you can do is let them cry. It stinks, but not everything can be helped... Just try to keep him comfortable and give him lots of love. Good luck :)

get calpol, or an infants painkiller, your trying to ease where hes cutting his teeth, but its high temperature shows, hes got some pain, so lower his temp and relive the pain, he'll be fine.. the orajel is just to numb the gums. remember how it hurt when you had tooth ache well thats simular to how he feels, check with the doctor ...im sure you will be told the same

try something hard and smooth like the handle of a spoon.that will help without any meds. it will help get the tooth out.most orajel things tighten the gum and can make the pain worse when the numbness is gone

Fingers are always good too. We used to put the teething rings in the freezer, that helps, otherwise it sounds like you're trying all the best things. Good luck!
