WDW has been closed all of 3 times since they opened. It is not probable that they will close when you are here, unless Orlando is directly in its path.
Because Orlando is centrally located, you are correct, we generally aren't affected as badly as other areas (like the coasts). We tend to get more damage from the tornadoes that spin off of the hurricanes, more than anything else.
Unless WDW shuts down, you will NOT get a rain check or refund. They are no more responsible for damaging weather than you are. If you plan to come during hurricane season, prepare yourself for heavy afternoon showers.....We get a lot of those during this time. I would also suggest purchasing travel insurance.
I hope you enjoy your vacation!!

Honestly, the best place to be in Orlando if a hurricane hits, is at one of the Disney resorts. A few year's back, when a big storm hit, we lost power in our area, but my fiance lived over by Disney and she said they never lost power. She had to work hurricane duty during one of the storms that year. Disney lets their guests stay at the resorts, unless it's a catastrohpic hurricane. They have food services at all the resorts, so if you're stuck on property, you'll still be able to get access to food and electricity. The buildings are fairly secure, and they hardly have any storm damage.
As far as getting money back, it's hard to say. I think you can canel your resort reservation a few days prior and get most of your money back. The tickets are non-refundable. You may want to consider getting tickets without an expiration date. This will help cut some of your losses, just in case. If the parks are open, it's still possible to enjoy the attractions in rainy weather. The nice thing about the Disney parks is that most of the rides are inside. So long as you have umbrellas or ponchos, you can remain mostly dry through out the day. MGM and EPCOT are good places to go in the rain, because none of the rides are outside.

Orlando doesn't get hit by hurricanes to often. The last one that was like 2 years ago was the first one to hit Orlando in like 30 years!
You will probably not get money back for the hotel UNLESS the hotel says they are refunding money (like hotel was hit really bad by hurricane & it was destroyed). The hotels were open even when disney was closed! After the hurricanes hit, disney was closed to people NOT at the hotels. The hotels will not close, even when the electric was off!
You will need to get travel insurance if you are that worried about hurricanes. Orlando will be fine during september.

It depends on how close the hurricane gets and bad it is. We were staying at Bonnet Creek Resort (a condo) adjacent to Disney property last October when hurricane Wilma passed by to the south of Orlando. We were allowed to stay in the condo, but the Disney Parks closed for half a day. It would have to be a very bad hurricane for Disney to ask you to leave the hotel. Disney would probably work with you if you canceled because of a hurricane.

I went 2 years ago in Sept right after (the next day) a big hurricane hit Orlando. I think they even shut the parks down for one day. Anyway, we got there and so many people were scared and cancelled plans and we had absolutely NO lines--It was great!! We joke and say we love Disney during hurricanes.

If you booked through a travel agent and purchased the insurance, you can get your $ back if you cancel ahead of time . Usually 5 days prior.
If your there already and a hurricane comes through Orlando , Yes if still could pose a problem depending on strength of storm when it hits coast :Hitting coastline CAT 1 Will most likley mean tropical storm winds in Orlando .
If you booked a hotel on your own , you can cancel 48 hrs before trip and not be charged (in most cases.)

Disney was actually rated as the most prepared place in case of hurricane.
I was there in September last year and while there was a hurricane off the west coast of Florida (Hurricane Rita), we only experienced some clouds and a bit of rain. We thoroughly enjoyed the vacation. (crowds were not bad!)
We are returning this year. Sept 17-22, when are you going?
