Time, research, and several trip to the pet store. When you do go to the pet store, get the clerks to let you hold and handle the snake. Just don't push her to do it. Hopefully, she will see that you are not in danger and give in. Even if she never breaks her fear completely. The exposure will help get her used to the idea of having one around.
Ps.
I used to be petrified of snakes and lizards myself. I now own a 4 ft royal ball python and a bearded dragon, amongst other things.

You won't! A snake was the one pet that my mom would never tolerate in the house. Wait until you have your own place; then you can do what you want.

Snakes don't like to be pets. Do your mom, and the snake a favory and get yourself a nice kitty instead. If it must be a reptile, bearded dragons make the best reptile pets.

Go to a pet store and ask to hold a snake that doesn't bite. Small chain pet stores will probably have tame adults that you can hold. Maybe she'll see it not biting and want to touch it. That's what happened to me. I held a tame adult and saw it wasn't biting. I now have 2 adults, 11 babies, and soon to have a juvenile.

Well this will take quite a long time to make her non-afraid of snakes, to solve this problem all you have to do is keep her intouch with it till she will get used to it...
