I am planning on getting a tattoo. I'm a 21 year old female and want to know where the best place to have it is & what is the best picture/symbol that wouldn't 'date' in fashion?

Also, can you get put to sleep when you have it done?

Just because I'm asking these questions, it doesn't mean I am not ready. I live in a rural area, 2 hrs from the closest tattoo joint. I'd prefer to be organised and know what I want before I go there. Hence, my 'research'.

I have just had a tattoo done.
I am 18 and terrified of needles. But it did not hurt.
I got mine on my lower stomach by my hip and it did not hurt at all.
As for what you should get... that has to be a personal choice. I got 6 stars. A large one to represent God/ Heave. And 5 smaller ones, to represent each person I have lost. I will e getting a snowflake soon, for my father.
I also love symbols, but always make sure it has a positive connontation. Love, Hope, Faith,Dream, Happiness, Strenght. Something like that.
And, you can get it just about everywhere and it will look good.

Lol. Work in the medical profession myself. They won't put you to sleep when they do them. Would cost a lot more than the tattoo itself to put you under. But don't worry it really doesn't hurt that much just depends on where you put it. Getting a tattoo is not like a lot of people do it, takes some time and thought. First you have got to put in somewhere that years later still will look good and about the same as when u first got it. Also, tattoos can either help your looks or hurt your looks. So take time deciding on the one that looks best now and down the road at the same time. Keep to not so bright colors since they can fade after the years and become other colors like red going to a light pink after the years or a really detailed tattoo on a bad spot and years later gets blurry together and all nasty. Try to keep the tattoo off areas that expand and grow a lot like on your muscles or other areas that change sizes often. This way the tattoo won't constantly shink and get bigger making it looked stretched when you are older. I am a guy and on women i have seen some many nice ones. Usually on the lower back, one of the shoulder blades, ankles or feet, or lower stomach. Just take you time finding the right one for you. Example, a friend of mine years ago used to love Lepracans. Don't know why but now he hates them so he hates his tattoo. So go with a tribal or something simple that years later you will look at and still like and no where to visibile like your hands or neck in case down the road you get a great job and they wont allow you to have visible tattoos. Well, good luck.

My advise is to get it put on where you can enjoy it. A tattoo is art for you and maybe about you. Your concerns make me wonder if you should be getting one at all. Wait a bit, look at lots of art and find a tattoo artist you like to do the work.

If you want to be put to sleep for it, don't get it done. If you show up drunk, most reputable tattoo artists won't do any work on you. Pain is part of the process. They don't usually hurt too bad.

if you think you need to be put to sleep, then you shouldn't get a tattoo

DO NOT GET A LOWER BACK TATTOO
you shouldn't get it on your arm either, i think they look too manly

i think tattoos should be a very personal thing, my fiance and i are getting tattoos together when we get married, (i adore you, in french) in a place where only we can see them.

put it somewhere that it can be hidden, because when you're 60 and all saggy skinned you dont want a droopy tattoo for everyone in the world to see.

Uh no, you can't get "put to sleep" or have any kind of anesthesia, because that would have to be administered by a doctor. Just deal with the pain. As for what will not look "dated," if I knew what would be popular 50+ years from now, I don't think I'd be wasting my days on Yahoo Answers. I would probably recommend that you don't get Winnie The Pooh though.

no, you can't get 'put to sleep' when you have it done!

criminey!

if you can't take the pain, don't get it done!

that's half the 'fun' (pride) of getting one - is suffering through the pain!

that being said - I got my first tattoo on my wrist and I love it there! I can look at it any time I want to (unlike on a back or butt-cheek), but if I feel like covering it up, it's easy to with long sleeves or a big watch or bracelet.

I dont think you can go under when you have it done, and the WORST place you can get it, as cool as it looks, is the base of your spine. If you ever have any medical problems, thats where they tend to stick stuff.
as for the design, i dont think tattoos get very dated, but my preferences are patterns that circle your arms or legs (like a band around your arm)... they look cool. Oh, and words aren't a very good idea...

I have a tribal band around my ankle. It really hurt but it is very beautiful. I wasn't sure what I wanted so I had the artist create her design on me. I love it.

Later, I went back and got another one of her designs and I won't tell you where that is. It hurt, but again.. it is beautiful.

Both of mine can be hidden for my professional appearance and one can be shown daily when I want it to be.

Hell no they wont put you to sleep. I think you should pick a tattoo that means something to you....not what someone else tells you to get. And a good place is back...lower or top shoulders. Also anklets and good.
