I have a 2001 Ford Mustang V6 with 80,000 miles on it.

I went to the local Jiffy Lube a couple of weeks ago and given the option of paying $4 extra for “bottled oil”. The attendant was completely unable to explain why the bottled oil was worth paying extra for.

What did he mean by “bottled oil”?
Is bottled oil any better than what they usually put in?

there is a legitimate up cost there. Now $4.00 is way out of line but as a quick lube owner I can tell you that I pay about .20 more for bottled oil than I do for bulk. So the prices I make are for bulk oil and every once in a while I will get that customer that has it in his mind that my bulk oil is recycled so they want it out of the bottle. Fine but like I said my prices are set off the bulk oil price. So I charge people that want bottled oil $1.00 more for whole oil change. Now I only charge more if it is oil that I offer in bulk. If I don't have it in bulk then I charge no more because the prices for that oil is already there. I can tell you one thing though is that if you go to a quick lube and they want to charge you $4.00 more for bottled oil then they just are being crooks. And like some of the guys that have worked for me it is an inconvenience for them to have to pour bottles in and not use the gun so they charge more out of spite too I think.

I only use oil from bottles for my car because at least it's sealed and there is all required certification on it.
The oil from barrel comes from a big truck that delivers oil - it could be a good oil but could be the recycled one - how do I know where is it from? So, every time I'm buying oil in the bottles and go to an oil change place wher they use my oil. It's few backs more, but I want to be sure.

Sounds like they were attempting to get you to purchase a synthetic oil,it can be better however,if you change your oil/filter regularly, save your money and continue using the "bulk" (the bulk oil is no different than the standard bottled oil of the same viscosity and/or brand)oil usually used in quick lubes.

Hope this helped!
(quick lubes do NOT recycle used oil to put in other vehicles)

They have some oil that they just siphon out of a 55 gallon drum. Other 'specialty' oil has to come out of a bottle b/c they don't use as much of it, such as synthetic or higher mileage oil. If you don't need some specialty oil, I would just go w/barrel oil. Another reason bottled oil is more expensive is the packaging. More packaging = more cost

Steven, listen. These oil change places use bulk oil when they change your oil. It's typically Penzoil I think. Anyway, they also have bottled oil like you'd buy for yourself at the autoparts store. But the thing is, they want to charge you about twice as much or more compared to buying it yourself. At 80k, you don't need to use any special oil, stick with the bulk in the weight grade recommended by Ford.

I have no idea, unless he was saying that the oil they sell in plastic bottles is a higher grade oil, or synthetic oil. In those cases, there may be a benefit, especially if the standard oil they use is some no-name brand.

Jiffy lube uses re-cycled oil out of the hose that you see hanging in the stalls. So if your getting it out of the bottle he is selling you new oil.

I suppose he was only trying to get into the act of the magic word 'bottled'. If people are willing to pay $5 - $6 for bottled water, why not do the same for oil............

I wouldn't trust anything Jiffy Lube says...I took my 96 GMC Sonoma there and 2 weeks later had to have a new transmission put in because they "messed up" according to the manager
