If you got her recently from a pet store that doesn't seperate genders than she is most likely pregnant (although this is odd, most stores seperate everything but rats and mice these days).

Is she housed with a male? Hamsters are solitary (excluding some of the dwarf kinds, but I'm assuming you mean a typical Syrian/Golden/Short Haired hamster) and shouldn't even be housed in same-sex pairs, so make sure she is by herself. This is especially important if she's with a male still. Male hamsters can make great fathers but they can also be the opposite. It is also possible for them to get the female pregnant almost immediately after she gives birth. This would put the female under way too much stress and isn't good for her.

I looked some of this up online, as I breed mice instead of hamsters, but a lot of it is similar. Hamsters have a gestation period of about 16 days, and generally show at about 10 days. This means that if she doesn't have them within 6-8 days, she most likely isn't pregnant. "If a pregnant female does not give birth after 18 days this is usually an indication of phantom pregnancy, labour not occurring or problems giving birth. " And the site says this is usually okay.

However, that's assuming she doesn't have a stomach problem or some sort of tumor. Is she getting evenly round or "lumpy"? Lumpy is not a good thing and she should be taken to a vet immediately. If you know for a fact she hasn't had any contact with a male, she should also be taken to the vet. If she has been with one, within 16 days or so, than she probably is pregnant. If this is possible, then make sure to clean her cage out soon so you don't have to when she has her pups. I would add a piece or two of cat or dog food to her diet for protein. If she does have pups, make sure to leave her alone for several days, only disrupting to give her food and water.

good luck!

If she is pregnant, the worst thing you have to worry about is the possibility of 8 to 14 babies (average litter), some can go from 14 to 26 depending on the hamster breed.

She will do all the work herself. No need to worry too much. Just make sure she has food and water, keep her cage clean. When you see her setting up nesting don't bother her until she has her litter.

When I worked at a department store years ago I took home a pregnant hamster because she got mean and was biting people. They just want to be left alone. Once she had the babies she was back to herself and not biting.

Good luck... let us know how it turns out.

If she is pregnant, you can find good information on caring for her and for the babies she may have at http://www.petwebsite.com In the meantime, you may want to take her to the vet for a professional opinion. If she isn't pregnant, there may be something serious going on with her.

look like your hamster IS pregnant. pregnant hamsters do not like people to hold them. they will bite you when you hold them in hand. don't worry, maybe she is trying to protect her babies. scared that if you hold her, you might drop her. she will back to normal aft give birth to baby hamsters.

she might give birth to babies anytime in this week, most likely. so from now on, try to put her cage in a dark, and quiet room. do not disturb her unless feeding her. if she give birth to baby hamsters, do not disturb the babies and DO NOT TOUCH BABIES for at least 2 weeks. otherwise she will eat her babies (she couldn't recognise the babies smel if u touch the babies). if your hamsters are not dwarf hamster, saperate the male and female. however, for dwarf hamsters, the male will help take care of the babies (my hamsters did that, trying to keep his babies warm by crouching on the babies as the mother hamster couldn't take care of all of them at the same time). feed the mother hamster something protein rich - bread soaked with milk or boiled egg white. she may seems to left her kids all around the cage - in her house, at the corner, on the running wheel. don't worry too much. the mother will take care of them.

after 1-2 weeks, when the little guy started to have fur and crawl around, you can hold them by that time. after sometimes, they can eat solid food.

if you saperated the male from female, maybe this is the time you introduce him slowly to the youngsters. put him in the cage and observed. let him familiar with their smell. if the male act aggrasively, saperate them quickly. repeat this everyday and let the male know you will saperate him from the crowd/his favourite cage/favourite running wheel (he probably missing his 'home' by now) if he doesn't behave himself. repeat this everyday till he doesn't bother about the new members in his cage. this is also a way to introduce a new member to your hamster.

good luck to your hamsters and CONGRATS!!!
