Actually, I would return it, and point out the mistake, as one answer suggested here.

I asked this question, because I heard it asked on a radio program this morning. Happily, about 20 people phoned the radio station to answer, and I think 18 said return it and 2 said they would keep it.

Return it. The same thing one would want another to do if they witnessed you dropping money or something of value.

Return it.

Some people may think, "Hey, it's just a few dollars, what's the big deal?" Well, to me, it's not a big deal. That's why I'd give it back. I have a good job, make enough money to pay the bills and put a little back for an emergency. I own my house, my car is paid off, and I have some nice stuff. Why would I throw away my honor and integrity for a few dollars that would not make any difference to my life.

And then there's the other side of it. Cashiers are now widely known to get paid really well. And a lot of places take it out of a cashier's paycheck if there is money missing from the drawer at the end of the night. They might even get written up or fired for the drawer being too short. So why would I want to take money out of the pocket of a person who might actually need the money and possibly even get them fired? It might just be a few dollars to me, but it might mean a lot more to that cashier.

In the end, nobody else might ever know that I kept that money that was not really mine. But I would know. I would know my integrity had been compromised. If my word can't be trusted, I'm of no use to anyone. And that is reason enough.

You should always point out what has happened so that the person will not make the same mistake again so easily. More importantly, it will ensure you will be rewarded in other ways. Whenever I have resisted temptation and done the right thing you can bet your bottom dollar that someone will be kind to me at some later stage. Try it - you will be surprised how often it will happen! Don't ever keep money that is not yours - one you have spent it you can never get it it back if you then feel sorry about it.
