"Cricket" was originally designed and marketed towards to people living in URBAN areas of the nation. Basically it the means for this telecommunication company to make a profit from specific clientele - those individuals not wanting their phonecalls to be traced and or monitored by certain law enforcement agencies and the likes.
That would be the "politically correct" way to say it. The other way to explain it would be that "Cricket" is looking to make money off drug dealers and the likes. They saw the profits that the apparel companies were making and they decided to seize the opportunity too.

They have since shifted their focus to that of a normal cellular carriers.

Their plans in some cases are better than those of the major mobile carriers. The one plan they offer is actually pretty good -
$45 per month for unlimited local calling, unlimited long distance, unlimited text and picture messaging. That is a really good deal considering.

I don't know much but its similiar to Trac Phones. I only heard of them since I've been in Pittsburgh. It's basically only for the Pay-As-You-Go type deals with no contract.
