Buddhists celebrate the sangha on the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month and see this as a realm of obsessive desires - the ghosts want to eat, but cannot swallow; when they try to drink. the liquid turns to fire, intensifying their thirst. Instead of offering what the ghost might want, they offer 'gifts of the gods' (sacrificial foods offered by monks) which might not be what is desired but instead causes them to see what is more important.

In China, Ghost Festival is on the fourteenth night of the 7th lunar month and goes on for two weeks and the entire month is Ghost Month, where the spirits visit earth. Chinese people offer luxuries and all the spirit's favorite foods. Appeasing the ghosts with food and gifts will earn their goodwill and perhaps good fortune; incurring their wrath will only bring bad luck. So you should cook good tasting foods that will satisfy and please these spirits.

Japanese celebrate the ghost festival Obon on July 13th to the 16th, where they clean and honor ancestor's graves. The two types of ghosts who visit earth are gaki and the jikininki, both greedy and selfish unsatisfied types who have cravings for specific things, usually the worst thing imaginable. Since the rest of the year they are in hell, the foods put out are the nicest kind.

Hindu people celebrate Pitra Paksha Tarpana, or ghost festival the day after the full moon in August and for 15 days after. They offer them food to please ancestors via offerings to the poor and to Brahmins, but do not eat the food, as it will be loaded with the desire for the physical and will subsequently throw off your sadhana.

The Jewish people recognize hungry ghosts as the Watchers and demons, hungry but with no mouth, thirsty but can not drink. They put out an extra glass of wine at Passover for their prophet Elijah.
