That depends on what they're doing. It could be that they don't want to lose you and so by not encouraging you to go off and stand on your own two feet, they are keeping you with them. Lots of parents are scared when their little babies grow up and leave home - empty nest syndrome. It just means they love you, and you need to explain to them that no matter what happens you'll only be a phonecall away or just down the road.
The second possibility is that you're completely misreading the situation. I have to be honest, by not giving us much info, it sounds a tad like you're having a kevin-the-teenager-type strop; "it's so unfair!!!". In that case, open you eyes and grow up.
However, there's always option 3 - that they really are selfish and negative. In that case, tell them how you feel and don't take any notice of them. Do what you want to do in life. Hopefully they'll grow up eventually.
I hope that covers all eventualities!!

If they have actually told you outright that they don't want you to achieve anything then this is unfair. Although I can''t believe anyones parents would say this :$
I think a bit more information on the situation is needed to make a fair assessment.

I completely understand! Ive been in the same situation - parents having negative effects on me.
At the end of the day, its YOU thats going to be living YOUR life, not them. Rise above these negative comments and focus on the positive. Dont let your parents negativeness overcome your positiveness.
One is only successful in life if he/she has a positive outlook on life. You only live once.
Do you want to become negative like your parents and pass this on to your children?
No? Then overcome it now!
Good luck :)

They may be jealous of your youth. Older people are particularly annoyed if they missed out on university before the education system was expanded in the late 80's. try not to judge them too harshly.

I consider that unfair. Typical parents want their children to be better then them.
