Teaching kids about abstinence? Or teaching them about safe sex and contraception? Or both. Or neither. Hmmm?

I think that teaching kids about safe sex is going to benefit them in the long run. If they are made aware of the possible challenges that you can face when having sex, then maybe they would likely wait until they are more responsible. Even if they don't wait teaching about how to have safe sex will at least arm them with the protection they need. It's kind of like giving someone a gun without giving them instructions on how to use it properly. They both can kill.

I don't know why we can't really teach both abstinence and safe sex at the same time. That it is preferred to practice abstinence but if ever put into a position where they want to have sex, how to do it safely.

The idea of abstinence alone doesn't seem to be working since teens are pressured and have the hormones telling them to do it regardless. I think most teens think of abstinence as general guideline to follow if you can, but to break it has little consequence.

Teaching safe sex is always a must and it is a message that is getting through, despite all the maury povich shows would have you believe.

I think a balance between the two, abstinence and safe sex practices, is the best way to go.

You are probably better to teach both -but heavy on the abstinence

Teach them all both because they are after all just kids! We call them kids because they do not make decisions like adults! So give them all the information you can stress your choice and hope for the best!

well abstinence would be great but with music, movies, cartoons, and the fast life safe sex is probably best, but you need to practice what you preach so be careful. or both.

all of the above.

they have to know the consequences - ALL the consequences. pregnancy, emotional risks, STDs - especially STDs.

and they have to know that saying no is an option. masturbation is an option. contraception is an option. it's their choice - or it should be, anyway. and they need to have the tools to make the right choice for themselves.

we also have an obligation to our kids to keep them out of high-risk situations until they understand the risks.
