United Statesians call their country America because the US is the only nation that failed to name itself, 'The United States of America' is a designation not a name. The correct way to call this country is 'US of A' NOT 'USA', alternatively you can call it 'U.S.' but not America nor it's citizens Americans.
There is no such a thing as ‘American’ nationality, America is not a nation America is a continent with many nations in it. The US never named itself the name of the United States is a designation it comes from the end of the Declaration of Independence, "WE, therefore, the Representatives of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, in GENERAL CONGRESS, Assembled...". The preamble to the U.S. Constitution reiterated the phrase: "We the People of the United States..." (The authors of these two documents probably used the phrase "united states" in place of a list of colonies/states because they remained uncertain at the time of drafting which colonies/states would sign off on the sentiments therein.) The geographic term "America" specifies the states' home on the American continent.
It is therefor incorrect to refer to US citizens as Americans with the intent of denoting citizenship, or the United States as America with the intent of denoting a nation. Americans have a term for US citizens, we are called United Statesians by the rest of Americans, to say American with the intent of denoting citizenship or America when we mean the United States reflects poorly on our attitude towards the 70% of Americans that are not United Statesians.

Well, North America is a continent consisting of the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico. Notice that we are the only country on the continent with America in its name. This is not very difficult. There is also no South or Central American country with America in its name.

America refers to the entire western hemisphere consisting of the North and South American continents collectively known as "The Americas".
North America refers to the entire continent, of which Canada, USA, and Mexico are a part. The region known as Central America is also included in the North American continent. This includes countries such as Cuba, Jamaica, Bahamas, Panama and numerous others)
Many US citizens don't realize there are other countries in the world and the US is not the center of the universe.

No, because American is known to be a person of origin from the US. The Americas were named after Amerigo Vespucci who traveled along South America realizing it was a new continent, and being an educated man was the first to write home on the fact, much disputed as a plagiarism, thus earning the right to have the land named after his namesake by Martin Waldseemüller in 1507, but the Portuguese were already aware of the new continent.
The proper name in use for a while was Columbia from Christopher Columbus, an name more appropritate, Columbo means dove in Italian, a country of doves, literally, people and wild pigeons and doves.

Did you ever take a look at an atlas, or go to school. North America is a continent and in that continent you have Canada, the United States and Mexico.

The country's name is The United States of America and if we (I am a native born citizen of the place) gave a flying donut about the feeling of the rest of the people in this hemisphere we would either use the whole name of our country or say USA. But most US citizens don't give a rat's hindquarters about any other country.
Sorry.

It would have been better if you said we should call ourselves the United States. There is no America, but there is a North, South and technically Central America. Still, who gives a ****?
