For the longest time I thought it referred to Orwell's 1984, but then I saw a question recently that told me it was a British reality TV show. It's just that I've read a lot of allusions to it, in newspapers, comments on social network sites, etc., and there's no way they're all talking about the same thing.

What is it then?

George Orwell wrote 1984 in 1948 and changed the last two numbers in the year for the tile. He lived about six miles away from where i am now and there is a plaque to that effect in Wigan, Lancashire, England.

The story is about Orwell's opposition to totalitarian rule such as that in Russia at the time and that of Nazi Germany a few years previously. It features the hero, Winston Smith, who opposes the government which knows what everyone is doing through 'Big Brother' a surveillance system like a TV in everyone's homes where they can be observed and controlled by hypnotic orders.

This is where the expression 'Big Brother is watching you' comes from.

In England there is a TV 'Reality' show named Big Brother where a bunch of people are put into a house where they are watched by TV cameras 24 hours a day. They are given various tasks to perform by 'Big Brother' in exchange for food, drink and rewards. Each week someone is voted out by the TV watchers until there is only one person left who wins £70000. Personally I find it poor TV, very trashy but some of the contestants become 'celebrities' and the cheap press reports it avidly.

The concept of "big brother;" an authoritarian and suppressive regime controlling peoples lives by invasive means DID come from Orwell's 1984. You've heard the Orwell concept in referece to government and/or police actions and sometimes to advancing biometric and monitoring technologies. "Big Brother" is also a reality TV show that can be seen in many countries. Anybody can be talking about "big brother" when they feel their privacy has been infringed.

Well it started with Orwell's 1984 and now the concept that "Big Brother" is watching has become a cultural reference. It is a reality show now.
