It's an expression of emotion, like astonishment, surprise, sadness, being impressed, etc.
Literally it translates as MOTHER OF MINE!
When you pronounce it, the emphasis is on the first syllable. Something like MAM-ma mia!

Literally, "mother of mine", but it's just an exclamation. Like our "holy cow", which rarely has anything to do with spirituality or farm animals.
