The goddamn news reporters and various other schmucks coined this retardedass phrase for what reason. Goes right along with 'jumbo shrimp' et al.

I know what they mean, but obviously they don't know what they mean.

"Close proximity" is a case of galloping redundancy, unlike "jumbo shrimp," which is an oxymoron.

It's either a tautology or a redundancy (I always get those two mixed up)...like "hollow tube" or "past history" or "free gift."

The one that really frosts my cupcakes is "The proof is in the pudding." Apparently they never heard that the proof of the pudding is in the eating. And let's not even start on mispronunciations....

It's redundant--Proximity means it's close.
Jumbo Shrimp is an oxymoron.

Other phrases that make me crazy:
held with his hand (what else will you hold it with?)
fell down (can you fall UP?)
thought silently to herself (you can think loudly to others?)

Makes them sound smarter than saying 'same area' or 'near to'. And most of them need all the help they can get. I love to hear them try to pronounce names of foreign countries/people. m
