I am interested in going to medical school too. But, currently I am working on my B.S in electrical engineering. You don't have to be "pre-med" major to go to medical school. Complete the basic requirements and earn a B.S in field of your choice and you will be eligible to apply. Even though it's tough to manage all these classes, i think, in the long run it's worth it. The broad knowledge you gain can only help you as a practicing physician. I believe medical school admission committee understands that as well as students from diverse background and majors accepted in all the medical school.

Think about what is motivating these desires then choose, or find options outside the box.

Say you want to be a doctor but you want to help with international issues. Join doctors without borders.

You can still take a few electives in international relations, but your pre-med course load will already be very full. You must pick your priority and not allow a secondary priority to get in the way.

Come to think of it, you can just get a few books on international relations and have discussions with people about the issues. You don't really need to take classes on the subject.

As a medical professional that went Pre-Med, I would highly recommend not going that route. By "pigeon holing" yourself into pre-med, you are limiting yourself and in many ways, labeling yourself. This will lead to tougher roads. Many of my collegues declared their majors their junior year, and most of them went bilogy, or even theology, and had much more success and easier road traveled. You want international relations, so go that route as a minor and major in bio-sci. Then, you will ultimately have the final decision which way you go on graduation day...med school or ???. Don't set yourself up for failure. Contact a college counselor and discuss the options and ideas. Map it all out and stick with it. Good luck, and hope to be working with you in about eight years.

Well, pre-med is not a major, just a program. Plus, you don't even have to be in the pre-med program to apply to med school. Sometimes it's better not to be declared as pre-med, so you'll have more flexibility with your courses. Just make sure you complete all the requirements for med school before you graduate.

Major in International Relations! Medical schools do not care what you major in, so long as you get good grades and many schools in fact encourage you to pursue "humanities" based majors, if that is what appeals to you. Keep in mind though that you will still have to complete the course requirements for medical school, which typically involve:
-1 year of general chemistry + lab
-1 year of organic chemistry + lab
-1 year of biology + lab
-1 year of physics + lab
-1 year of mathematics (typically Calc I and II)
-1 year of English/Writing

With a little planning and hard work, you should be able to both do your major and take these classes in a typical 4-year program, and so long as you do well in your science courses, you have as good a chance as a Biology or Chemistry major of getting into medical school.

Major in pre-med, make that your focus while minoring in international studies. Weigh out the courses you need and balance them out between time and subject matter. It's not going to be easy but if you are motivated nothing can stop you.

I would suggest focusing on pre-med, going to medical school, and then joining Doctors Without Borders. That seems to be your best bet for attaining all your goals. Otherwise, you'll be in school for freakin' ages.

Use your "electives" for international relations courses.

I'm majoring in Internatial Relations, creative writing, and minoring in music and german...fhew! It's hard work, but it'll be worth it in the end. If you love both Pre-med and international retations, go for it! Major in both! It'll be tough, but I'm sure you'll love it ^_~ Good luck!!

Premed is a major in itself. You'd have to double major. I had a hard enough time with one, I didn't even consider two, so I don't know what to tell you about how to juggle it all. I guess I'd recommend you sit down with an academic advisor and see what they say.
