No it won't blow up, but you do need to at least check the level. Most cars now say in their owners manuals to change oil every 7500 miles, and that is regular oil not synthetic. I think for anyone that isn't changing oil often, because of time or whatever reason, they should use a good synthetic like Mobil1 and change it 12 months or 12000 miles max. Have to check the level now and then tho, you may burn a bit, leak a bit.

When Mobil 1 first came out, they were testing it for 100k miles or more, and found the engines still within manufacturers specs.

OK rookies, here it is from the race team that uses synthetics. Synthetic oil can, and does last far longer than petroleum based oils, but it is the condition of the motor that decides the longevity of the oil, no matter which kind you use. Gas naturally seeps into the oil system and dilutes the oil, and water condensation also enters a crankcase via condensation. These are the main contaminents that break oil, any kind, down. Now if you have a newer motor with low mileage and in good running condition, then synthetics offer better friction reducing properties and synthetics do not absorb condensation like petroleum products do. Therefore, if you change your filter at 3000 miles and add for the lost volume in the old filter, you can go upwards of 10,000 miles between oil drain/fill. Petroleum products break down after about 3000 miles and therefore required total drain/refill.

Boy, sure are a bunch of idiots out there. Synthetic lasts longer than conventional oil, period. You don't change oil based on mileage because of the motor design. You change the oil at a mileage because the oil wears out from use. Synthetic oil will not leak out faster or anything of the sort. 5W30 is 5W30. That's the viscosity rating, it is no more or less leak-prone than conventional oil. I'd never waste money on synthetic if the motor actually leaked or burned a significant amount of course. 3000 miles is a STUPID benchmark that is so ingrained in peoples minds that they can't let go. The oil companies are happy these people don't think for themselves and consider the evidence. 4-5000 miles on conventional oil is fine if the conditions aren't extreme (racing, towing, etc). Unless these morons have actually had their oil tested at 3000 miles, they are talking out their a$$es. That is the ONLY way to know how much life is left in an oil. And a reason that new cars are using oil life monitors. It's not a gimmick, its so you don't destroy the motor.

Well, it really depends on what type of driving you do. Still, if you are changing your oil every 3000 miles, there is no need for synthetic (IMHO). Synthetic oil is more stable and has enough additives to allow for an extended change interval. For normal applications, if you don't take advantage of this, it's like wasting $3.00+ / quart on your oil.

So my answer would probably be 5,000 miles even with a fair amount of city driving. If you mainly do highway driving, you can get away with even more. But no, not 8,500 miles.

Manufacturers specs vary per model. Some models require synthetic oil and only need to be changed every 10K miles. An older car with that many miles should be changed no more than 5K regardless of oil type. The 3K oil changes are a scam, unless you do lots of hard, city driving.
