I agree there is no such thing as the "best first move". It depends on your style and how you feel with the types of position that arise from different openings.

The most popular first moves are 1. e4 (king´s pawn two steps forward), 1. d4, 1. c4 and 1. Nf3

If you are a beginner, I would recommend going for the so called "open games", as they tend to be more tactic and at this stage of development this is what you need most. Play 1. e4, then concentrate in developing your knights and bishops, castle as soon as possible, keep control of the center with pawns or pieces.

Chess is a complicated and fascinating game.
Experiment and see what suits you best. There are many choices.

Grab a hold of an opening primer in your local library or bookstore and play, play, play.

While I think it's true that there is no single best move to make, I think it can be helpful to try an opening move consistently for a few games, and see where it takes you. If you're just starting out in chess, try a few games with 1. e4 (king's pawn); then maybe a few games with 1. d4 (queen's pawn); then maybe a few games with a knight opening move. With time and experience playing chess, you may start to get a different "feel" from games that start with different opening moves, and you may decide which opening move best fits your own style as a chess player.

A chess game is not won or lost with the first move. That said, it's generally agreed to be a bad idea to open by moving either rook pawn. The advantage of opening with either the king or queen pawn is that you immediately open an attacking lane for one of your bishops. (As mentioned above, a good opening move allows you to develop your pieces.)

Good luck!

Concentrate your opening moves on -
1) Developing your pieces quickly and efficiently
2) Controlling the center of the board i.e. with pawns
Therefore a classic and proven first move is to put the king pawn two spaces forward where it exerts control over the center while opening up a doorway for your king bishop or queen to be developed.
Really I don't think anyone can claim to have the "best" first move. It really depends on what your planning, how you want to attempt to control the center and develop. If your just learning chess though I would try the king or queen pawn advance and learn from how your opponent reacts to it. Maybe try something else next time, see what works well for you. Keep your mind on developing your pieces to places where they can exert pressure and control while opening the way to get your king castled and out of its precarious position in the center of the board.

I myself like d4, which is queens pawn out 2 spaces (I always play Queens Gambit which is a solid opening). However, according to Bobby Fischer, the bets opening move is e4, which is kings pawn out 2 spaces.

I go for either the queen's or king's pawn. My goal is to control the center of the board and force my oponent to move in directions that I can control.

Even with that stated, I believe it is up to the individual to determine their own style.

I castle 1st(move rooks).I keep my Queen protected. I know you
are to protect the King, but I prefer my Queen. If I were to lose
her I'd be so upset I would'nt want to continue. I like the Q's
open also.

Queens pawn opening is my favorite- most people practice the kings pawn openings and are not prepared for this.
