well, there are different types of communications degrees. there are public relations degrees, organizational communication degrees, advertising degrees, marketing degrees, radio and broadcasting degrees, television degrees, journalism degrees... i think you get the picture.
You can do many different things with any of these. I have a public relations degree and I work in a college. i do a lot of writing. I also do event planning.
you could be a wedding planner, a speech writer, an advertising and marketing sales person, a pharmecuetical sales rep, etc, etc, etc.
really, your best bet is to do some internet research as to what all a communications degree can do. trust me. there is a lot!

I can only speak from my experience.
I combined a BS in Computer Science with an MA in Communications. Everyone thought I was strange (I still get comments about it during interviews). But it has come in very handy as a Project Manager, where I have to be technical enough to talk to the developers and also a good communicator to translate developer-ese back to the business folks. Plus every Project Manager has to give lots of presentations and issue communication materials.

Lots of folks in the media industry (radio, tv, Web, print) have degrees in Communications. This includes folks behind the spotlight as well as in front.
I know that Communications can also be very writing-intensive, and commercial/academic informative writing might be a good fit.
Seems like teaching, counseling or some other social work would also be good choices for those interested.

If you're good, PR, media relations, various HR positions (although a Master's in Comm won't necessarily help you, since an MBA or an MHR would be more desireable).
My Comm degree landed me in temp agencies, despite strong academics and involvement - although I got outstanding offers from major papers offering $7.85 an hour to start as a reporter!
I went back for a degree in Econ, and I'm wishing I would've done it in Math instead - math majors get so much more respect by simple virture of intelligence.

Sales rep. is a common one. With a master's degree you can teach college. Go into general business, you'll find that you are typically good at public speaking. That is a necessity.
