Weight Gain and natural progesterone
By Catherine Rollins
Hormone imbalance can often contribute to unslightly and unhealthy weight gain, particularly around the tummy, hips and thighs. And to add insult to injury, by simply being overweight you're body is converting that extra body fat into a form of estrogen called estradiol that will further compound your estrogen dominance.
Certainly, there's an inseparable connection between fat and estrogen. And the good news is that progesterone - our body's 'natural' anti-estrogen - will help your body convert fat into energy.
A natural diuretic, progesterone will further assist weight loss by regulating sodium imbalance within the body, correcting fluid retention and helping you eliminate excess fluid from the body. However, it may initially exacerbate estrogen dominance symptoms which can have the appearance of weight increase which is usually only temporary.
Some women actually stop using their progesterone cream after they gain a little weight thinking, incorrectly, that progesterone is the culprit. They failed to understand the other factors that contribute to weight gain once progesterone is introduced.
But correcting female sex hormone imbalance is only part of the picture. We need to focus squarely on optimal metabolic health.
So what is metabolic health? Well, Dr. Lowe defines metabolic health in this way: A state in which the chemical processes in our cells are sufficient to provide us with at least two things: (1) resistance to sickness and disease, and (2) the vigor, stamina, and well-being needed to fully engage in all aspects of life.
Metabolic rehabilitaton is a process in which a patient gets control of, or eliminate, all the factors that are impeding her metabolism.
Here are the nine most common factors that cause hypometabolism. It's important to remember that the first one can cause or influence many of the others.
Under-regulation by thyroid hormone
Too little cortisol
Sex hormone imbalance
Nutritional deficiencies
Unhealthy diet
Chemical contaminants
Low physical fitness
Untreated physical problems
Troublesome drugs
You can see from this list that adding progesterone may or may not assist in weight loss despite resolving female sex hormone imbalance. We have to consider the 'whole' picture that is you.
Some pretty straight-forward tests ordered by your doctor can better determine what's going on with your body, and from there he or she can suggest an appropriate course of treatment. This may include thyroid hormone therapy in combination with bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT).

Seems there are answers. Progesterone can cause edema or fluid retention, so a weight gain but not a solid one, only of fluid, so a 'water pill' or diuretic could even get rid of 10 pounds overnight in some women. Not clear if you want to gain weight or get rid of it, so such ambiguity may make it difficult for someone to answer you. I suspect the time of day that you put your question up also makes a difference. I think most people stick with the first page of questions, so missing 8 -10 more pages of questions are less likely to be answered. I know I see a question I'd like to answer and after doing another answer, that other question seems to have disappeared. Hope this helps. The one who would presecibe it for you should answer or the Pharmacist.

Progesterone: During menopause, progesterone levels will also decrease. Like estrogen, lower levels of this hormone can be responsible for many of the symptoms of menopause and that includes weight gain, or at least the appearance of it. Water retention and menopause often go hand in hand since water weight and bloating are caused by decreased progesterone levels. Though this doesn’t actually result in weight gain, your clothes will probably feel a bit tighter and you may feel a bit heavier. Water retention and bloating usually disappear within a few months.

There is a strong connection between fat and estrogen. Other than the ovaries, fat is the most significant source in the manufacture of estrogen in the body. Women can get caught up in a cycle where increased body fat raises estrogen levels and estrogen increases a tendency to accumulate body fat. Women have bee found to gain an average of 10 - 15 pounds at menopause as estrogen promotes water retention. Low thyroid function can also slow down metabolism and lead to weight gain. Natural progesterone helps to normalize weight by balancing estrogen dominance. Natural progesterone makes thyroid hormone receptors more sensitive, thus, aiding thyroid activity in the body.
Dr. John Lee as well as other noted health care providers state that Natural progesterone helps us lose weight. In addition to progesterone however, proper diet and exercise are also very important contributors.

The weight effects of progesterone are highly variable. This is probably why no one has answered. Progesterone often causes weight gain, but not to the predictable degree that estrogen and related compounds do.

You could have done a google search for your answer quicker than waiting for someone to answer your question here. And since everyone is different the progesterone may or may not cause you weight gain. So there.

Natural Progesterone, however, re-directs the activity of estrogen by increasing the sensitivity of estrogen receptors and, most importantly, inhibits many of unopposed estrogen's undesirable side-effects, which includes interference with thyroid hormone activity.
Most women who are plagued by the symptoms of hypothyroidism have found that thyroid function has been normalized within a few weeks of using a properly formulated Natural Progesterone Cream, in conjunction with proven Dietary- Lifestyle modifications.
Because natural progesterone most often has a normalizing effect on a sluggish thyroid, the use of thyroid medication may over-stimulate the thyroid gland. Consult your health care professional if you are taking prescription thyroid medication.
In addition to a properly formulated Natural Progesterone Cream, many informed women have found that supplementing with ten kelp tablets per day has a nourishing effect on thyroid function.

It has not made me gain weight but, of course, we're two different people. I use natural progesterone and it has been well worth it. Good luck.
