My son wants one for his birthday (he'll be 5, but I want something that he'll want to play for years). His cousin has a PS2 and he loves it and the games, but what is the "it" system today? I haven't played since the days of SNES & Sega. Help?

they are all really good but in a couple of mounths the Wii(nintendo) and the PS3(sony) are comming out to fight the xbox360(microsoft). if your going to by one soon get one of these. the ps3 will play ps2 games and trust me theres a handful of good games. xbox360 will play xbox games but the good games are more for older teens. the wii will play gamecube games but the cool part about it is that the remote can sense motion in the coolest ways. but if you need a pros look i'd say find a gamestop store and the guys that work are nice and will tell you everything
ps3= $500-$700
xbox360= $400
wii= $250

The problem is that the Playstation 3 is coming out soon. Once that happens they will soon stop making games for Playstation 2 And the Playstation2 isnt really for youger kids. This is hard because you are looking to buy a sytem at the end of a generation of games.
Here is why i think:
Playstion 2- doesnt have games really for his age though in a few years or so he will love it-$135$
Gamecube-he will like it now but im am not sure about it in the future-price-under$100
Nintendo wii-not out yet but will cost i think 500$
Playstation 3-not out yet but will cost around 700$

Hi,
I beg to differ with the previous answer but the Sony PS3 is not yet released and will come out only in November.
Now today the hot and latest consoles are called: "Next-Generation consoles" There are 3 consoles in this category:
Microsoft Xbox 360 (Released)
Ninteno Wii (Will be released in November, earlier was called Revolution but the name has now changed)
Sony PS3 (November Release)
Now all these 3 are for the Television and not Handheld consoles.
Since your kid is 5 I will suggest waiting for the Sony PS3 to release as that system has lots of kids games.
Ninteno Wii too has lot of kids games but they are hard to come by in India.
Xbox 360 will be superior to the best of my knowledge in graphics but titles are released fewer on this console and there are very few kids games.
With respect to years of playability, in my opinion the maximum time frame you can get out of a console is 5 years cause after that the next to next generation will come in.
One more thing if you are living in a city in India which is subject to voltage fluctuations it is HIGHLY recommended you buy a stabiliser when you buy the console (cost of stabiliser Rs. 1100 approx) Next-Generation consoles are very delicate and a voltage fluctuation can burn the chips inside.
Also for Next-Generation Consoles games may not be so frequently available but there is an online store in India called PC Gaming Store at: http://stores.ebay.in/PC-Gaming-Store
They are once again in my opinion by far the best in latest games as I buy my Xbox 360 and PS2 games from there only.

Me and ma boys always like the PS2. But I'd say U better wait for PS3. It's Sony. There ain't any way that its gonna be bad. Play station was the the hottest and will remain as it is. Others may come and go.. ,,

Could u wait till christmas and get him a PS 3? but to answer ur question xbox 360 is the best right now but only for a few more months. PS 3 is out in november and it will be 'it'. But if he really wants something, PS 2 should hold the fort for him

XBox 360 BUT you should do some research into the kind of games that he likes.
Perhaps he'll want to wait until the Nintendo Revolution comes out.

You can get the playstation 2 or the xbox 360. those r the 2 top most famous game systems out today. or u can get him a psp which u can carry around anywherre. but the catch is that its even more than the playstation 2!!!!!! but it is good for bringing out or somethin like that. i would recomand psp if he likes to take his games out. but ps2 if he mostly stays home.

i've got been enjoying video games for practically all of my existence and maximum of them have been certainly violent yet I certainly have not yet committed against the regulation, i don't smoke nor have I shot all people yet. those human beings have already been like this in the previous they started enjoying video games, besides the reality that not for all time. now and returned video games are a element in spite of the shown fact that it quite is a uncommon case

it's xbox 360 and ps3. ps3 can play x box games and ps2 games and dvds. i dont know about x box 360 but these 2 websites will tell you more.

The most "it" system is the play station 3 but it is not available yet. the most "it"system that is available is the x- box 360
