Check out the information at the website for The Stuttering Foundation of America. It is loaded with excellent information.

When you are angry or tense stop speaking until you can take a calming breath and get the anger / tenseness under control. You will have to practice to get better about it but it is worth the effort.

I don't stutter but I was very bad about saying things that were hurtful and I hated apologizing afterwards. I decided since I hate to apologize I would quite saying things that I would have to apologize for. Now when someone says something to make me angry that I would have smarted off about before, I close my eyes, take a deep breath and wait until I can speak calmly and clearly. ONLY then do I speak. I have " lost " many moments of spouting off and once the ordeal was past me I was thankful for that. I have been practicing this for 20 years and most of my friends now would never believe that I used to have a temper or a " smart " mouth. I have become a much better person and I rarely have to apologize anymore. THAT is the bonus.
