The scariest book would be The Hot Zone by Richard Preston, this is what the back cover says, so you can see if you would like it....A highly infectious, deadly virus from the central African rain forest suddenly appears in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. There is no cure. In a few days 90 percent of its victims are dead. A secret military SWAT team of soldiers and scientists is mobilized to stop the outbreak of this exotic "hot" virus. The Hot Zone tells this dramatic story, giving a hair-raising account of theappearance of rare and lethal viruses and their "crashes" into the human race. Shocking, frightening, and impossible to ignore, The Hot Zone proves that truth really is scarier than fiction.

It may not be well known but it was called Faery Tale by Raymond Feist. That was an incredible, wonderful, and exciting book. It's a comtemporary fantasy/horror tale about a family from California who moves to the top country of New York and encounter a few dangerous and nasty fairy creatures. If you haven't read this book, I suggest you do. It has a few geniune scary moments and suspense.

The Rocking Horse. Very creepy book about an old rocking horse found in an old house. It comes to life and kills people if I am remembering correctly. It has been many years since I read that and I still remember how scary it was.

Pet Sematary by Stephen King. The thought of that creepy little undead toddler running around with a scalpel totally freaked me out.
