The chemical saltpeter or saltpetre is comprised of:
potassium nitrate (niter/nitre); and/or
sodium nitrate (nitratine/soda niter)
Saltpeter is a natural mineral with many uses in commerce and in magic. It is employed to preserve foods, to make powdered incense burn more evenly, and as an ingredient in Gunpowder (which is Saltpeter, Charcoal, and Sulphur.) It also has a reputation for diminishing the male sex drive when ingested, although this is not backed by scientific evidence.
Magically speaking, Saltpeter has a long, long, long history in hoodoo as an agent of magical protection in spritual baths and floor washes and as a shoe-sprinkle. Also, because it is an ingredient in Gunpowder, it is used in formulae which are hoped to produce quick ("explosive") action, such as Block-Buster. In this capacity, it can be an ingredient in love spells or money spells where fast action is required. (There are also certain "explosive" spells that call for Gunpowder as an ingredient, and if you can't find gunpowder locally, you can use Saltpeter, Sulphur, and Charcoal to mix up your own Gunpowder for use in such spells.)

Potassium Nitrate, which I believe is KNO3- I could be wrong.
The stuff about "killing mens sex drive" is flat out wrong- its actually a meat presertative thats been around since WW 2, when most GI's were illiterate.
Most Potassium nitrate is used in the manufacturing of gunpowder, explosives and ferterlizer.

Saltpeter is one of the three parts that make up gun powder. During WWI, it was use to cure meat, as they didn't have refrigeration at the time. That was when they learn about the side affects of it, and why we didn't have as much of a population boom after WWI as we did after WWII. It lowers blood pressure in a male in such a way to prevent him from having an erection.

Potassium Nitrate. Sorry, don't know the actual chemical composition of it, but I know it's one of the ingredients used to make gunpowder, and rumor has it they put it in the water at all the military basic training facilities because it makes the guys less able to, uh...how should I say it...get it up?

Saltpeter ia a name for potassium nitrate, a principal ingredient of black gunpowder. There is a common belief that ingesting it reduces a male's ability to copulate; I have no idea of whether that is so.
