right or wrong, legal or not aside, and simply answering the question why...I would guess two things.
Depending on if he is a good boss, or a crappy one.
The good boss will offer the opportunity to take the test, they really are a fun concept when done for frivolity. He may want to decide how best to address discomforts on the job, or how to improve the environment.
Perhaps he just wants to understand his people a bit better. Any benign reason is acceptable.
The evil boss will want one to use it against people, support prejudgments, justify unfair treatment, discover weaknesses, any malignant reason will do.

Significant clues about your thinking processes, your work environment choices, your preferences about team vs solo work and much more can be learned by taking some personality tests. Most of them are fun and very enlightening. If used correctly, a good manager can fine tune his departments according to how his employees score on the tests. In particular, the Minnesota Multi-Phasic Personality Indicator (MMPI) is very interesting. I scored as an ENTJ and the results revealed and confirmed much about my personality preferences accurately. Like I said, if used properly, its an invaluable tool. If not, then at worst its wasted. By law they cannot be used to discriminate against or otherwise adversely impact any employee. Ask your employer if he/she will share his/her results with the group.

I did this once in my department. It was interesting because we could better understand our interests and strengths and delegate work better, but it was kind a way of pigeon holing people. Plus personality tests can be so manipulated by the takers.

it is done a lot and its a pile of crap. My suggestion is to make up absurd answers to the questions. they cannot force you to answer truthfully and you will see how they accept these answers as showing your true personality. Its fun when you do it that way. I have done so several times.
