The British Empire was the main global superpower in the world from the 16th Century up until the very early 20th century, controlled by the government of the United Kingdom. At it's peak over a third of the world was under it's control. The countries now known as the United States, Australia, Canada, India, Pakistan, New Zealand and many african nations were all at one time part of the British Empire. It fell apart when the UK was practically destroyed in the first and second world wars and the remaining parts of the empire declared independence. The United States then replaced it as the world's new superpower.
For all it's faults, it was the best thing that ever happened to the world. It gave the world industrialisation, the English language, sowed the seeds for some of todays greatest countries and spread democracy worldwide.

The British Empire composed of countries which the British invaded so that they could exploit the natural and human resources for the wealth it gave them. The Empire enslaved the indigenous populations of many countries around the World. It started the slave trade from Africa for labor to work on it's plantations in the Caribbean where the indigenous populations had been subject to genocide. It was at the forefront of 'civilizing' America. It taught that people outside Europe were 'savages' who were not worthy of respect yet alone life or liberty. It was arrogance and racism in its worst form. Even in the 50's Britain would brag how Africa was nearly conquered from Egypt to South Africa. And Golliwogs were given out with Jam. It waged War on China because China did not want Opium imported into China to the harm of it's people. It divided India between India and Pakistan. It imposed Israel in the Middle East without any concern for the wishes of the Palestinians. The Empire sponsored Piracy on the High Seas and spread disease and misery around the World. It imposed its will on people's who never asked it to be there. It was an Imperialist enterprise which some apologists would excuse where there is no excuse.

The British Empire extended almost all over the earth during the period of colonization. Britain had parts of Africa and Asia (including the entire country of India) and parts of Canada as well.
In the 20th century, slowly, bit by bit, the British were losing their colonies and they are now back to being that little island in the Atlantic.
