I have decided to pursue a career in midwifery, but I am clearing my previous student debts and ensuring that I have some money behind me before embarking on the course, which I estimate will take me 3-5 years. During this time I would like to strengthen my application, and have been in contact with some practising midwives already. However I would like to gather some further experience and insight into the role, perhaps by volunteering - which opportunities would best strengthen my application? Is there anything else that you would suggest?

I am a practising midwife and I was lucky enough to gain a place on a direct entry programme.
There are sometimes opportunities to volunteer within maternity units, and most volunteers are in a similar position to you.
However, in all honesty, this offers little insight into the role of a midwife, as volunteers are not allowed any patient contact, and are not allowed onto the labour ward at all.
For more hands on experience, it might be useful to try and work a few hours a week as a health care assistant as another answerer has stated. I understand that this might not be possible with your other work committments, and also because these jobs are often hard to come by in some areas.
Nevertheless, and in spite of all this. still go for it.
I was unable to gain any experience prior to my interview and I was fortunate enough to be offered a place, and this is the case with most applicants.
If you're woman centered and care about the difficulties women face in pregnancy, childbirth and beyond....this will show at interview.
You're already on the right track, speaking to midwives and finding out about the role of a midwife.
Ask for journals from these midwives if they will lend you them, and keep up to date with current issues and research which relate to midwifery and women's health in general.
Learn about the extended role of the midwife and her role in sexual health and health promotion.
This is all points on the interview scoresheet.
If you can't gain any experience, as a volunteer or otherwise, ask if you can visit anywhere that might be relevant and speak to a member of staff about their role. This could be maternity units, genitourinary medicine clinics, family planning services etc.
Keep a diary of all you have done and mention it within your application and show it at interview.
I really hope this helps.
Best wishes and good luck!

I do not know what your degree is in but you could try and work as a health care support worker on the maternity unit. When I was working as a midwife we had girls doing this job part time so even if you have other work you might be able to get a part time position. It would give you a lot of experience which would help a lot when you started your midwifery degree

Having the RN after your call is in basic terms a remember of passing the NCLEX Nursing boards attempt. definitely definitely everyone with an associate's degree or a bachelor's can take the boards. an mind-blowing form of people get their friends and then artwork someplace which will reimburse them to get their bachelors. that's a solid attitude. although, some associate's ranges are 3 years besides, so some think of its merely as nicely to pass forward and get the 4 twelve months degree out of ways precise away. the craze in hospitals at present is to hire greater nurses with bachelors and many times you may desire to have it to get a administration place. yet another concept: in case you artwork as a nurse's aide for the duration of school, , they're going to frequently reimburse your degree as nicely. additionally being an aide in a well-being middle is a solid way of seeing what the ambience is like.
