You mentioned that your hometown is in France. Is your baby American (at least by birthright) and French? Then you might consider getting two passports:
American: http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/get_840.html
French: http://www.consulfrance-newyork.org/article.php3?id_article=17

Yes. It used to be the baby could travel on the mother's passport. She could have her picture taken with the baby, but this has changed recently.

I will go home to have my baby but will have to return to China when the baby is about 5 weeks. He/she will need a passport even that small. The entire 5 weeks will be spent getting the passport and the visa.

Check out the US state department site. You should be able to find the nearest passport office to you. Most post offices can take passport pictures, but you may have to mail off your application depending on where you live. There are only certain places around the US where you can get a passport in person, and they are usually for people who need to get visas. Otherwise, they expect you can wait to get your passport in the mail.

yes, not only a passport, but also a paid ticket, even if the little one will be sitting on your lap. also, just to be sure, i would take a birth certificate with a raised seal, like the one you get from the board of health, not the one they give you at the hospital.

uhm...on second thought, i'm not really sure about the passport thing, as the passport is good for 10 years, when we wenmt to aruba, people had thier kids birth certificated, but not passports for the babies. better call the airlines or your travel agent to be sure.

The above website comes from the US State Dept and will give you everything you need to know about obtaining the passport for the infant. By the way all minor children (including minors and infants) must have a valid Passport.

the basic answer is YES.
absolutely YES for Europe.
there are a few exceptions for Mexico and the Caribbean where you can travel with a birth certificate and other ID but even that's about to close.
