I'm pretty sure every species does it. It just depends on the reason. Some may do it for their babies, some because they'd rather fight to the death. And maybe even for praise? A human might to go to Heaven. Cuz, I believe that sacrificing your life is a noble deed. But doing it intentionally to get in Heaven wont work.

Saw a rare National Geographic video of a hippopotamus defending a caribou against a crocodile or alligator, not sure which it was. Very strange footage being that these two animals were strangers, and the hippo probably lived in this same water hole with the croc or gator. Maybe it had something against the croc or gator. Also I heard a story once from a friend of a family member. They said their friends house caught fire in the middle of the night. They were pulled out by fireman, and the dog ( a german shepard ) , came out carrying their 9-month old daughter in it's mouth.

One day I was in this dépanneur, and here was this hold-up... the cashier was acting crazy didn't give the money. While he was yelling at the thief, I saw from the corner of my eye some sort of lizard entering the dépanneur. The thief lost his mind and was gonna shoot the cashier, but just before the lizard ran like hell, and actually jumped in front of the cashier. This was a kind of armored-belly lizard, so he didn't even die, the bullet went back into the thief's head. When the police arrived, I was still there because I definitely wanted those Tostitos. When I told the cops what happened, they didn't believe me, not even the cashier because he had no idea what just happened in front of his eyes, this guy though there was an angel-sniper guarding him. I spent two months in a psychiatric ward because of that.

Dogs do that all the time. Female animals do that all the time for their babies.

A few years ago I saw a momma quail followed by a marching line of about a dozen of her chicks. The last chick dropped into a depression made by a hoof-print and it started chirping in a panic.

The momma quail halted and all the chicks stopped in step. I was about to lean down to rescue the little chick when the mother quail challenged me. I politely retreated two steps and watched the momma quail gently sweep her chick out of the depression with her wing. Then she went to the lead and the procession of quail continued on.

Imagine the courage and love of that little bird to challenge a 5'-9" 200 lb. man with a rifle for her baby. We should learn from nature!
