1) a^2 = 5 => a = ±sqrt(5) = ±2.2360679.
a^2 - 4a + 18 = 0 => a = 2 ± sqrt(14) * i (where i is the square root of -1).
2) 24 out of 200 is 12 percent.

1)
(a^2 - 5)(a^2 - 4a + 18)

Use the distributive law:

a^2(a^2 - 4a + 18) - 5(a^2 - 4a + 18)
=(a^4 - 4a^3 + 18a^2) - (5a^2 - 20a + 90)
= a^4 - 4a^3 + 18a^2 - 5a^2 + 20a - 90

= a^4 - 4a^3 + 13a^2 + 20a - 90

2)
24 out of 200 means: 24/200
percent actually means "how many out of 100"
So, reduce the fraction so there is a 100 in the denominator:

24/200 = 24/ (100*2) = (12 * 2) / (100 * 2)
the "2's" cancel and you get:

12/100

Now that 100 is in the denominator, take the numerator and just write:

"12%"

And that's the answer.

here are the steps to multiply those two expressions:

(a^2 - 5) (a^2 - 4a + 18) =
= a^4 - 4a^3 + 18a^2 - 5a^2 + 20a - 90
= a^4 - 4a^3 + 13a^2 + 20a - 90

Here's how I did it: I multiplied each term in the second expression by each term in the first expression, and then I combined like terms.

when you want to multiply expoinents, you add their powers; and you know how to multiply base numbers.

second part : the answer is 8.3 percent. You"ve been given the correct formula: (200/24)*100), but the wrong answer by other posters. You can test this out on your calculator, or it's not hard to do by hand!

if question 1 is asking you to simplify then:

1) a^4 - 4a^3 + 13a^2 +20a - 90

2) 12%

is this 9th grade math as in Algebra I?

1) either : a^2=5
a=+,- sqrt(5)
or
a^2 - 4a +18=0
using the formula a= (-b +,- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac)) / 2a

2) 24/200*100 = 12%

i kinda cheated i'm 3rd year college student :D

What you want in question1)?
2) It is (24/200)*100=12%

24/200 = x/100

24 x 100 = 2400

2400=200x

divide 2400 by 200

x=12

I am unclear what you're trying to find in question one (like an actual numerical answer or just simplified. If it is just simplified, I think that the question is the answer if you're simplifying), but number two is 12%. (I just finished Grade 9 Math)
