Just like the grocery store - you put items in the cart that you'd like to buy.

As for the second part of your question, do you have to buy right away or can you wait, it depends on the way the web site is set up. Many sites will keep your shopping cart info so you can come back to it later on. They'll even update the cart if prices have changed since your last visit. Only way to know if a site will let you come back to the shopping cart is to try it..... or email their customer service section and ask.

The shopping cart is where you put the items you want to purchase, while you continue to shop. When you are done shopping go to check out and all your items will be tallied up. You can decide not to purchase any item(s) in your cart if you wish, just like when you go to a grocery store.

same a regular shopping cart at the grocery store. it keeps track of what you are looking or wanting to buy in a certain area (via a cookie) and whenever you are ready to purchase you click your shopping cart to view what you selected and make a final determination of what you want or don't want. rather than remembering where your particular shoes or bag was at on the webpage and bookmarking it, this allows you to keep all your possible purchases in one place and also keeps track of how much everything is for you.

a shopping cart on a shopping website is used to hold the items that you are wanting to or are thinking of purchasing. think of it as a basket you use at the grocery store to place the items you will purchase.
