Defragmentation : Go to Start> All Programs> Accessories> Defrag
Disk Clean-Up: same directions as before. Just look for Disk Cleanup instead.
Run a virus scan and follow any directions it may give you. We had a ton of viruses last year just from downloading things off the internet. Yes, sometimes visiting infected websites can be a culprit, but downloads are the worst, IMHO.
Depending on what browser you're using, go to the 'Tools' section on your browser's toolbar. Look for 'Options' or 'Internet Options'.. or something similar. Clear out your cache and your cookies. Also, it would be a good idea to clear out your history. None of these things will harm your computer or delete something you didn't want gone. Unless, of course, there was a site in your history that you wanted to keep.. in which case, you should bookmark it, that way clearing your history won't delete it. (I've done that before! lol)
RAM can also pose a problem. Then again, I have only 96MB and the only time I experience problems is when I try to run my browser and something else at the same time. Easy fix: Don't pull more carts than your donkey can handle.

I would do the following:
1. Run disk defragmenter (the best is from Executive Software called DiskKeeper).
2. Delete files from your computer you don't need.
3. Run disk cleanup (located in Start|Programs|Accessories|Sy stem tools).
4. Run spyware program such as Adaware and/or Spysweeper.
5. Run your anti-virus program for a full scan.
Additionally, you may want to add more RAM to your computer. What operating system do you use? If you use Windows XP, I would recommend at least 512MB of RAM, but 1 GB would be better for home use. RAM is cheap, so you can upgrade for about $100 - $150 (could be even less).
These steps will speed up your computer. Good luck!

There are LOTS of steps you could take. email me, and I can send you a document that shows you the step-by-step of getting rid of stuff. Need to know how old your machine is, and any technical stuff that you might know (CPU, amount of RAM, etc). Can't make a miracle, but can definitely speed things up.
