Same reason in American 350lb fat people are paid millions to shove another fat guy around the field so a quarterback can throw to freakish athletes. Its entertaining, except for in soccer they can provide entertainment to the masses instead of the few people who can relater to a 7'2 center that doesn't have to jump to dunk a basketball. Basketball, baseball, and American footballers all are overpaid and overrated. Because unlike like footballers who become great players through hard work, a basketball player can be born and so can an American football player.

What are you talking about? Football (Soccer) players are overrated??? then what about US football players who are paid millions of $$$ to play 13-or-so games in a whole year? Let me tell you: football players (in Europe) play their respective national tournaments and their national cups; then, according to their final rank in the previous season, they may qualify to play at least one tournament on the European level (Champions league or UEFA Cup). Thus, some clubs (franchises) participate to up to 4 different competitions in a year, so don't talk about football players being overrated and overpaid!

Because people love sports. Team owners can charge exorbitant amounts for tickets to the games because people are willing to pay. The players can ask for outrageous salaries because the ticket prices are so high. It's a simple matter of supply and demand.

The media overhypes everything about the Premiership - teams, players and games alike.
Want a real league? League One all the way. No pressure, no way of telling who's going to win any particular week and low expectations = plenty of surprises.
