I do agree with you that some rappers are definitely making themselves out to be something they aren't. But although I can understand why you'd be angry at the rappers that glorify having a harsh, violent life or those that think that kind of life is a game, some truly have been through the situations they rap about. It's the pretenders that mock the seriousness of some people's realities. But I digress...
I do understand why people come up with that kind of conclusion about rap; the only kind of rap a lot of people are exposed to is the mostly negative and stereotypical mainstream rap that's force fed to us on a daily basis. But like a few others have already said, not all rap music is like what you see on TV or hear on mainstream radio stations. If you were willing to dig a little deeper into the genre, you'd discover that not all rap emphasizes materialism, misogyny or is filled with profanity (i.e. - conscious (as in socially or politically conscious) rap, Christian rap, etc.). As a matter of fact, there are a lot of hip hop artists out there who don't fit the "cookie cutter rapper" mold and talk about subjects other than money, sex, drugs and murder. For example:
- Little Brother
- Mos Def
- Talib Kweli
- Common
- De La Soul
- Dead Prez
- The Roots
- Madlib (and his alter-ego, Quasimoto)
- Five Deez
- Ugly Duckling
- Slum Village...(and plenty more)
And a lot of people have never heard of them.
Unfortunately, you'll rarely (if ever) find any of them in the mainstream media because for the most part, greedy record companies and good ol' Corporate America have conditioned the masses and flooded the market with whatever "trend du jour" makes them the most money as opposed to actual talent, variety and substance. That's what the real problem is.
p.s. - Next time you want to make a point about rap music, it would go over a lot better if you didn't insult and/or talk down to the people who happen to like it (as well as any gay people who might be reading this).

Gay isn't the time period to make use of for rap. It's simply overused. All rap is is speaking for the duration of tune with a few rhymes. A lot of rap songs are made similar to each and every different, it will get dull after a even as. People who concentrate to it time and again are competent to hear the identical beat for greater than one million occasions. It's tough for a rapper at present to get an normal beat.

Rap is just like rock, there's some good stuff and some bad. Not all of rap is bad but all that you ever see on TV is some bad stuff cause apparently positive rap isn't cool. Does it annoy you when people call rock the devil's music even though its not all like that? That's just like saying that all rap is bad.

I think rap is the worst sort of music. I dont think you can even call it music any more. The old school stuff is o.k. now and again, but that is about it. And Im sorry you were shot at.

have you heard any aussie rap.. the cat empire hilltop hoods even check out scribe(nz)
FOR EXAMPLE THIS IS REALISTIC AS WITH ALOT OF OUR RAP... this is the cat empire
THE CAR SONG
The weekend is the weekend
And it’s sunny in the park
I’ll stay here with my beer and fish and chips till it gets dark
I’ve got a lot of homework
But homework he can wait
I never start my homework till its already too late
My parents say think about your future and my teachers say the same
But it’s hard
When there’s a basketball game in the park
It’s 1998
And everybody’s saying:
“Harry, you’re going to be a lawyer some day…”
It’s Monday bloody Monday
And there’s two things I forgot
I forgot to do my homework
And I’ve only got one sock
I’m halfway through a test
But I just can’t concentrate
I’m sitting next to Fontaine
I want to ask her on a date
I really want to start a conversation
But each time she walks past
I start choking on my pencil
And fall flat on my ***
I need to concentrate
I have to get this grade
Or I might fail to be a lawyer someday
BRIDGE
But just right now
Can’ think of anything better to do
Than just sit down at the piano and a write this tune
And maybe later
Maybe later in the afternoon
I’ll sit back and relax
And think of all the things I’m going to do…
CHORUS
Someday…
I’ll buy an old car
Someday…
I’ll get that car to start
Someday…
I’ll learn how to drive too
And then Someday…
Imagine all the things I could do.
(That was 1998 now
Bring it forward to the present day now
Cause some things have changed
but some things never change)
The weekend is the weekend
And it’s sunny in the park
I’ll stay here with my beer and fish ‘n’ chips till it gets dark
I just saw Peter Parsons
Who used to be in my class
I always gave him wedgies cause I thought he worked too hard
He said, “Harry, life is great –
I feel so happy these days –
I’m a litigation lawyer –
So I got it made
I’m going out with Fontaine
Rememer her from tenth grade?
I drive a Porsche so I can’t complain…”
BRIDGE
****! And look at me can’t think of anything better to do
That just sit down at the piano and write this tune
And maybe later
Maybe later in the afternoon
I’ll sit back and relax and think of all the things I’m going to do…
CHORUS

I think another term would be more descriptive of the "music" currently being labeled as RAP. All the "gay" people might get offended.
