I think that story is an urban legend. Tesla was well known for saying things could be done and then saying he did not have enough money to do them. He had good theoretical ideas but was no good at making them practical. Stories that he invented AC power are not true, although he did do important work on developing it. Stories that he invented radio are partially true in so far as Marconi's patents infringed on Tesla's earlier patents. While he did do many amazing demonstrations using a Tesla Coil to power lights without wires, it was the wireless transmission of the power that was amazing; the power for the Tesla Coil came from ordinary sources, that is a generator that needed power to turn it.
