Seriously, I just don't understand this trend of horrible reality TV shows. How the hell can anyone possibly WATCH this unmitigated crap? It's not even reality! Only reality TV there ever was: The evening news!

Yes, it will. But until then they will just keep coming up with more recycled ideas to replace the old ideas that people are no longer interested in. Right now people are still hooked on the reality tv idea of ordinary people becoming "stars", so it will be a while.

Look at the film industry: the number of moviegoers in the past couple of years has taken a dip because Hollywood has run out of ideas - they're either doing remakes of old movies/ tv shows or reusing plots with a younger and more scandolous cast. When reality tv hits this point it will go the same way; the pool of ideas is finite, it's only a matter of time.

It's a ratings game. You'd like to think that a show so inane like The Real World or Survivor would run out of places to go (if Jeff and crew go to Panama again I will scream!) and reach an upper limit on humiliation and pain, but until that happens or the network decides not to renew, it won't happen.

Many people watch it (thus generating the big ratings) because like the movies they're an escape valve. Things they wouldn't do themselves become more palatable and interesting to some because they get to transfer their sensation onto others. The viewer becomes the contestant (cf. Ever yell at a game show when you KNOW the contestant is making a boneheaded decision?), and it's a vicarious thrill for them. With the evening news, that's kind of hard to do.

I think so. I mean afterwhile, viewers are going to want to see something new, something different on their televisions. I hate that term "reality" because IMO, majority of the "reality stars" are not being "real". What's the first thing they said when they're shown in a very poor light. They said, "that not me, they edited the show to make me look bad, I'm really a nice person." I admit there were a few shows that were good in the very beginning but now some of them are getting ridiculous.

If it doesn't die of natural causes, someone should definitely kill it off. But...many American's today are simple minded and find mindless crap to be entertaining.

I agree but I don't think that it will ever die out now that it has begun.
