Could be it. Or it could be all those wonderful news stories that talk about random shootings and killings, rather than focusing on the good that a city does. I don't think we'll ever really know what goes through others minds. (as far as prejudice, fear, etc.) Mainly speaking for myself, I think its more a fear of the unknown. That's what always gets us.

I have been to Detroit a few times (most recently to Chene Park for a concert), and I love the farmers market, Greek Town, and many of the other things they have to offer as far as tourism. Some of the downtown parts of Detroit are pretty rough looking and could use some fixing up. Flint is actually much worse looking than Detroit right now. I grew up there and it scares the bejesus outta me.

*A side note- How many of the people knocking Detroit ACTUALLY live anywhere near Michigan? Like homeboy who said it could be the 2nd worst city now. There are million dollar home areas in Detroit, and according to Money some of the best places to live-

I don't know. I'm not scared of Detroit (I live in Michigan) I think it's movies like 8 Mile that show off the worst parts of the city. And yes, most of the population there is African American, but not everyone is out to kill you or steal your stuff. There are shitty spots here and there and some people are up to no good, the crime rate is high, but it could be worse. Just don't go there after dark or alone, make sure you know where you're going and avoid unnecessary stops.

It is pretty difficult to find a worse city in America than Detroit. However, they are rebuilding New Orleans, so with a little luck, you'll be the second worst city. The local government is a disaster and people are fleeing that area. It is too bad, because it once was a great American city.

Actually... no offense but statistics show that Detroit has the highest crime rate of any city here. And it's not even the largest city. So... yeah it's a bad city for crime. That's why it's seen that way.

It has nothing to do with race, I've been in Detroit on several occasions, I don't "fear" Detroit, but i do know it's not safe in a majority of the places after dark, high crime rate, you can't deny it, the crime rate is high, of course you like it, you live there, I don't live there, and I know it's a place I would NEVER want to live simply because of the crime, not the race.

Why is Detroit seen as a scary city? Try the FBI crime statistics.
